BIOGRAPHY FOR EXECUTIVE MAYOR, COUNCILOR NONKOLISO TUNDZI
Born and grew up at Eastern Cape, Councilor Nonkoliso Tundzi is the Executive Mayor of Westonaria Local Municipality. She attended school at Ntabankulu Senior Secondary School where she matriculated in 1991. In 1992, Councilor Tundzi moved to Gauteng Province where she stayed at Bekkersdal and joined the ANC including community structures in the same year.
She became the member of Isiqalo School Governing Body (SGB) in 1997 to 2003 and was elected as the chairperson. She also served as a member of Social compact which is the committee that was responsible for housing initiatives in Westonaria that resulted in the development of Simunye.
The Executive Mayor has a rich history in the ANC having served in the leadership of the Organization as the Deputy Secretary in 1994-1996 and led the ANC as Branch Secretary in 1997-2000. She joined the Council with impeccable skills on social, religious and political fields: Branch Executive Election Coordinator (1999 elections), Member of Housing Committee (1995-2000), trained and worked as a Community Peace Worker in Bekkersdal (1995-1997).
Councilor Tundzi has undergone various trainings on capacity building and leadership skills. She completed Councilor Development with the University of Pretoria and also did Executive leadership with the University of Pretoria. She is currently doing a programme in the Development and Management of Local Government through Wits University, Public Management UNISA and studying Municipal Governance through University Of Johannesburg.
Before her deployment in 2011 as Executive Mayor of Westonaria Local Municipality, Councilor Tundzi previously served a Councilor between 2000 and 2006 in the Council and served in different committees. She was also a Councilor at West Rand District Municipality in 2007 to 2011 and served in various Committees. She was elected the Speaker of the West Rand District Municipality in 2008-2011. Ms. Tundzi is also a Member of the SALGA IGR (Speaker’s Forum).
Having grown up in a politically conscious environment, Councilor Tundzi’s political and social involvement never abated. Apart from the activities already mentioned, Councilor Tundzi who is a gender activist is also intermittently, a tireless campaigner and committed herself to serving the poor and improving their living standards.
Biography for the Speaker of Westonaria Local Municipality, Councilor Smuts Poloko Monoane
Born on 08 September 1956, Smuts Monoane spent most of his time serving in the struggle against apartheid, building and empowering the community. During 1974 he joined and led the Student Christian Movement as a Treasurer.
Troubled by the oppressive system and jim-crow laws in the working place at the time, he joined and became a member of the National Union of Mine Workers in 1982 to 1989. His energy and talent saw him becoming a member of the African National Congress where he was elected Deputy Secretary of the ANC Bekkersdal Branch between 1996 and1998.
Impressed by his political spirit, the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) elected him as the Branch Chairperson of the West Rand Region. He has a vast political cloud that includes amongst others Regional Treasurer of the ANC Kenneth Kaunda Region (North West) in 2004 to 2006, Deputy Regional Secretary for ANC West Rand Region between 2006 and 2008 and re- elected 2008 and 2011. Between 2011 and 2014 he served as a Member of the Executive Committee ANC West Rand Region
Bro Smuts as he is popularly known, is an organizer, a dedicated servant of people, a teacher, a community builder, a political activist and an ardent advocate for equality in line with the ANC’s vision of a nonracial, nonsexist, democratic and united nation. He successfully participated and went through the Cadre Development Training Course in 1998 and participated in the ANC Provincial Executive Committee Political School in 2011 offered by Walter Sisulu Leadership Academy.
He continued his studies through correspondence and completed a National Diploma in Personnel Management (Technikon SA). Councilor Monoane also has an Abet Practitioner Certificate (UNISA), a National Certificate in Municipal Governance (UJ), Certificate in Housing Policy and Management Programme (WITS)and a National Diploma in Local Government Management BELGRAVIA).
A tireless hard worker as he is, he continued to sharpen his skills through undergoing training on the following short courses; Integrated Development Planning Skills Programme, SALGA Councillor Induction, Strategic Tourism Management, Community Liaison Certificate, Capacity Building, Local Economic Development and Human Resource Management Certificate
Councilor Monoane has brought a wealth of corporate governance to his deployment as the Speaker for Westonaria Local Municipality. He worked at East Driefontein Gold Mine as an Abet Practitioner from 1980 to 1996. He has worked as Community Development Officer in 1997 to 2004 and in the same year he was appointed as an LED Manager until 2010 where he was elected the Speaker of Council until to date.
He is widely admired for his brilliance by would be politicians and those around him.
