Westonaria budget tabled7 June 2010 Addressing members of the community, Mayor Khumalo said the municipality has the mandate to provide equitable service delivery to all the residents of Westonaria and to do good business so that residents can enjoy a good quality of life. “The budget is an instrument of development and ensures that the quality of life for residents is improved.” Mayor Khumalo said priority has been given to ensuring that basic services meet the required quality standard at all times and to protect the poor from the worse economic downturn. “An amount of R325,9 million has been budgeted for the 2010/2011 financial year, which will fund the ongoing maintenance, upgrading and replacing of the municipal infrastructure.”
As evidence that the finances of the municipality are in order, Mayor Khumalo said Westonaria has received four unqualified audit reports in the past five years. “This achievement must be sustained and a new financial strategy developed to ensure that the municipality continues to obtain a clean audit report between now and 2014”, she said.
The community of Simunye will see a number of developments taking place in the area. “In partnership with Gold Fields, a clinic will be constructed in Simunye at a cost R6 million. A police station, magistrate’s court and staff quarters will be developed in the area in order to reduce high levels of crime currently prevailing in that area.”
To ensure that services are rendered in an efficient manner, ageing fleet will be replaced at a tune of R10 million in order to optimise service delivery in the municipal jurisdiction. Mayor Khumalo urged residents to pay for the services provided by the municipality. “The municipality is owed over R90 million by consumers. This is concerning as this money would make a huge fiscal contribution towards infrastructure development.”
