Agriculture

Westonaria comprises mostly of agricultural and farmland. Agriculture has been neglected during the past few decades as an investment and economic development stimuli and employment sector.

Urban agriculture is the main agricultural activity, together with numerous smallholdings spread through the area, which enable people to grow their own vegetables to earn an additional income.

Since Westonaria comprises largely of farmland and agricultural holdings, to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the agricultural sector in the area, the municipality aims to undertake agricultural projects that will diversify the local economy, alleviate poverty and create jobs.

Agri-businesses
The scope of the project is on the production of herbs, essential oils and vegetables. Twenty-five small scale community farmers will be employed on the project, in turn they will have to provide work for 50 workers. The produce will be sold locally and exported to Israel and Europe by Superfecta.

Livestock breeding
This project will be for breeding of livestock. The livestock is to be sold for meat products and for the hides.

Nursery and instant lawn project
The aim of the project is to resuscitate the Westonaria Local Municipality nursery.
