Westonaria Local Municipality in partnership with Thembekile Mandela Foundation and Westonaria Community Trust gave out 6382 sanitary towels/pads to needy girl learners in Kgothalang Secondary in Bekkersdal today, 22 April 2015.
Preceding that was an extensive research done by Council wherein it found out that there is a massive number of girl learners who, during their menstrual period are absent from school because they do not have sanitary pads and cannot afford to buy them.
This programme will run for the next five years starting from today and distribution will be done every months in each school where there are needs.
“We are responding to the demands where some girl learners who during their menstrual period are not attending school as they should because they cannot afford to buy sanitary towels. Some resort to use unhealthy materials or fabrics and we cannot allow this to happen”, said the Executive Mayor, Councilor Nonkoliso Tundzi.
The Mayor highlighted that this programme is meant to revive and promote the dignity of the affected girl learners. “We want to create a hospitable environment where all learners are equal irrespective of their unfortunate backgrounds and can enjoy their learning. I hope this will bring confidence to the affected learners”, she said.
Lastly I thank Thembekile Mandela Foundation for their kind assistance and may I take this opportunity once more to encourage all especially learners to learn and capacitate themselves irrespective of their conditions, concludes the Mayor.
Consecutively, it was the turn for Thembekile Mandela Foundation. Ndikela Mandela, the founder for the foundation who indicated that the foundation is extending the hand of assistance to the affected girl learners so that they too can do the same to foreign nationals and other people.
She warned learners and those present against the not to tolerate or somehow participate in zenophobic attacks on foreign nationals.
The Thembekile Mandela Foundation seeks to promote and continue my grandfather, Nelson Mandela’s legacy of creating health and education programmes as pillars central to the social development of previously disadvantaged communities.
Aluzuko Malele is an 18 years leaners from Bekkersdal who is beneficiary of this programme and emphasized that she is glad as this will help her and many other needy girl children.
